John Swannell is a British photographer (b.1946), renowned for his portraits of The Royal Family and celebrated for his distinctive style in both fashion and beauty photography. He spent several years assisting David Bailey before setting up his own studio and developing his style through his commissions for Vogue, Harpers & Queen and Tatler magazine. In 1993 he was awarded a Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society, received notably early in his career. The Princess of Wales personally commissioned John to photograph her together with her sons in 1994. Among many Royal commissions, he also photographed the only official portrait of HM The Queen & The Duke of Edinburgh to celebrate Her Diamond Jubilee.
In addition to his commissions for The Royal Family, John has taken portraits for political figures and media personalities alike, including Richard Attenborough, Michael Caine, Bryan Ferry, Bob Hoskins, Norman Foster, Tom Jones, Glenda Jackson, Joanna Lumley, Ken Livingstone, Tony & Cherie Blair
John held several significant solo exhibitions and has published thirteen books. The National Portrait Gallery in London has over fifty of his photographs, whilst the V&A, The Edinburgh National Portrait Gallery, Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as the Royal Photographic Society all have many of his works in their permanent collections.
